De jure

By law.

De jure means "by law" or "according to the law". It refers to the formal legal position as laid down by statute.

De jure is a Latin term used in law to denote that a particular status, right or situation exists formally and by operation of law, irrespective of the factual circumstances.

The term is relevant where a discrepancy arises between the legal position and actual practice, for example in the recognition of governments, property rights or contractual relations. The distinction from de facto serves to separate legal claims clearly from factual situations.

In practice, lawyers use the term to emphasise that a right or obligation remains legally enforceable, even where it diverges from everyday reality.

“The company is the de jure owner of the immovable property, even though the building is de facto managed by a third party.”
