Suitable employment
Suitable work is work that may reasonably be expected of an employee, having regard to his education, experience, health and personal circumstances.
Suitable employment is a concept from Dutch employment and social security law. It refers to work that corresponds to the employee’s qualifications and capabilities and that the employee can reasonably be expected to perform.
The concept is particularly relevant in matters of unemployment, reintegration after illness, and proceedings before the UWV. Refusing suitable employment without valid reason may result in a sanction on unemployment benefits.
In practice, the UWV assesses whether work offered is suitable, taking into account factors such as commuting time, salary level and working hours.
“The employee was unable to retain the benefit because he had refused suitable work without good cause.”
