Terugkeergarantie

Return Guarantee

A return guarantee is a document by which a foreign national demonstrates that he or she will return to the country of origin upon the conclusion of their stay in the Netherlands. This document is frequently required in support of visa applications or applications for temporary residence permits.

A return guarantee is a declaration or document substantiating an applicant's intention to return, for example by demonstrating ties to the country of origin such as employment, studies or family connections. It prevents temporary residence purposes from being used to secure permanent settlement.

In Dutch immigration law, the return guarantee is relevant to preventing abuse of residence schemes and ensuring the temporary nature of the stay. Without this evidence, an application for a visa or residence permit is frequently refused.

In practice, a return guarantee is commonly required in applications for seasonal work, study or au pair residence, where the IND assesses whether the documents submitted are sufficiently persuasive.

“The IND rejected the visa application because the return guarantee did not sufficiently demonstrate that the applicant would return to his country of origin after his internship.”
