Emission Regulation

An emission regulation is a statutory measure that limits the quantity of harmful substances emitted by companies, vehicles or installations.

Emission regulations form part of Dutch environmental law and are directed at reducing air pollution and climate impact. They establish limits on emissions of substances such as CO₂, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, typically through permits or emission caps.

In practice, these regulations are enforced by authorities such as the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate or by decentralised government bodies. Non-compliance may give rise to fines, closure or liability, while compliance is often a prerequisite for obtaining an environmental permit.

“The undertaking was required to apply for a new permit because the existing emission regime no longer complied with the more stringent European standards.”
