Medical Expenses Insurance
A medical expenses insurance is an insurance contract under which the insurer reimburses the insured for the costs of medical care and treatments.
A health insurance policy covers the financial risks associated with illness and medical treatment. In the Netherlands, basic health insurance is mandatory by law under the Health Insurance Act and provides coverage for medically necessary care.
Such insurance is relevant because it governs access to healthcare, and disputes may arise regarding the scope of coverage, policy terms and reimbursements. This often arises in personal injury matters or contractual discussions with health insurers.
In practice, a law firm advises clients in objection and appeal proceedings against the rejection of claims or in assessing coverage in complex medical files.
“The client filed a claim with his health insurer for reimbursement of specialist treatment, which was initially rejected.”
