Liability insurance

A liability insurance covers the financial consequences of damage that the insured accidentally causes to third parties. This insurance protects against claims for bodily injury or property damage.

A liability insurance policy is an insurance product that protects the insured against liability for unintentional damage caused to third parties. This encompasses both bodily injury and property damage and applies to both individuals and businesses.

The insurance is relevant because claims for damages in the Netherlands can result in substantial costs, which, absent coverage, must be paid from the insured’s own assets. Although not statutorily mandated, liability insurance is strongly recommended to mitigate financial risks.

In practice, lawyers regularly advise clients on appropriate coverage, particularly in disputes involving tort or contractual liability.

“The entrepreneur took out a liability insurance policy to protect himself against possible claims following a workplace accident.”
