Arrondissement
Judicial district
An arrondissement is a judicial district within which a court has jurisdiction to hear cases.
In the Netherlands, the territory is divided into eleven judicial districts, each with its own district court. This division determines the territorial jurisdiction of the courts in civil, criminal and administrative matters.
The districts are relevant because they establish access to the courts and the venue for proceedings, which is generally determined by the defendant’s place of residence or the location where the events occurred.
In practice, the choice of district may affect the duration and specialisation of the proceedings.
