Occupational physician
An occupational physician is a physician specialized in occupational medicine who assesses employees’ fitness for work and advises on reintegration in the event of illness.
An occupational physician, also referred to as a company doctor, is a medical specialist specialising in the relationship between health and work. The physician assesses whether an employee is unfit for work and advises on possible adjustments or the resumption of duties.
Under Dutch employment law, the occupational physician plays a central role in managing sickness absence. Employers are required to engage an occupational physician to prepare a reintegration plan, as mandated by the Gatekeeper Improvement Act.
In practice, the occupational physician serves as an independent adviser, issuing medical opinions without breaching medical confidentiality and supporting both the employee and the employer in achieving a sustainable return to work.
“The occupational physician declared the employee partially fit for modified work again after eight weeks of sickness.”
