Estate

The estate comprises all assets and liabilities belonging to an inheritance or to the property of a bankrupt person.

In Dutch inheritance law, the term "estate" refers to the assets of the deceased at the time of death, including all property, rights and liabilities. This estate must be administered and distributed among the heirs.

The estate is relevant because the heirs may be liable for the debts comprised in the estate, unless they accept the inheritance subject to the benefit of inventory. In practice, an executor or estate notary is often appointed to administer and wind up the estate.

In bankruptcy law, the term "estate" denotes the assets of the bankrupt administered by the trustee for the benefit of the creditors.

“After the death of the decedent, the estate was inventoried by the notary.”
