Annual accounts
The annual accounts are the annual financial report of a legal entity, consisting of the balance sheet, the profit and loss account and the notes.
The annual accounts constitute a legally required document that records the financial position and results of an enterprise for a financial year. They must be prepared in accordance with the rules laid down in Book 2 of the Dutch Civil Code and provide insight into assets, liabilities, turnover and profit.
The document is relevant because it serves as the basis for tax returns, dividend decisions and external reporting. For medium-sized and large companies, an audit by an auditor and publication with the Chamber of Commerce are mandatory.
In practice, the annual accounts are used in financing applications, mergers and acquisitions to assess the financial health of an enterprise.
“The shareholders have adopted the 2023 annual accounts at the general meeting.”
