Reprographic Rights
Reprographic rights entitle authors and publishers to remuneration for the reproduction of their works by means of photocopies or digital processes.
Reprographic rights form a specific component of Dutch copyright law and confer the entitlement to claim remuneration for reproductions of protected works. They enable authors and publishers to receive fair compensation when their material is copied on a substantial scale, without the need to obtain separate consent for each individual reproduction.
This right is particularly relevant in the education, public and private sectors, where large volumes of copies are produced. In practice, the collection and distribution of such remuneration is administered by Stichting Reprorecht, which grants licences and allocates the proceeds among the rights holders.
The reprographic right is enshrined in the Copyright Act and serves to maintain a balance between the accessibility of information and the protection of creative works.
