Labour Migrants More Often Victims of Workplace Accidents

Labour migrants face a 10% higher risk of workplace accidents than other employees. Learn about the causes, risks, and how to protect your rights.

Migrant workers in the Netherlands have a greater chance of becoming victims of workplace accidents than other employees. Figures from the Dutch Labour Inspectorate show that an average of 126 workplace accidents per 100,000 jobs are reported annually. For migrant workers, however, this figure is 137 per 100,000 jobs – nearly 10% higher. Moreover, fatal workplace accidents occur twice as often among migrant workers.

Workplace accidents among migrant workers mainly occur in sectors with labor-intensive and often unskilled work. These include:

  • Metal industry
  • Slaughterhouses
  • Agriculture
  • Fishing

Expats, who generally work in higher positions at large companies, fall outside this risk group. It is primarily migrant workers in the above-mentioned sectors who face an increased risk of workplace accidents.
