A deed is an official document in which a legal act or fact is recorded, often with evidentiary force.

A deed is a written record of a legal act or a fact of legal relevance. Dutch law distinguishes between private deeds, which are drawn up by the parties themselves, and notarial deeds, which are executed before a notary and thereby authenticated.

Deeds are significant in that they possess evidentiary force and frequently serve as a prerequisite for the validity of legal acts, for instance in the transfer of immovable property or the making of a will. In practice, a notarial deed affords legal certainty and may carry executory force.

“The notary has drawn up the deed of conveyance for the transfer of the dwelling house.”
