Addition
An addition is a formal supplement or amendment to an existing legal document, such as a contract or deed, for the purpose of incorporating new provisions.
In Dutch law, a supplement refers to an addition made to a document that has already been prepared. This is typically effected by means of a separate addendum or codicil, so as to leave the original intact.
A supplement is relevant in that it enables the parties to adjust their agreements flexibly without the need to redraft the entire document. It ensures legal certainty and prevents misunderstandings regarding the amended terms.
In practice, a supplement is usually prepared by a lawyer or civil-law notary and must be signed by all parties in order to be binding.
“The notary drew up an addition to the will to afford the heirs additional protection.”
