Centrale raad van beroep

Central Board of Appeal

The Central Appeals Tribunal is the highest administrative court in the Netherlands that adjudicates disputes concerning social security, civil service matters and certain other administrative-law subjects.

The Central Appeals Tribunal (CRvB) serves as the highest judicial authority in specific administrative-law disputes. It hears appeals against judgments of the district courts in the areas of social security, social assistance and civil service law. The Tribunal is based in Utrecht and does not permit cassation appeals, so its rulings are final.

For lawyers and clients, the CRvB is relevant because it offers the final opportunity to challenge an administrative decision. In practice, the Tribunal is primarily approached in matters concerning benefits, pensions, the dismissal of civil servants and reintegration disputes. Its case law exerts considerable influence on the interpretation of social security legislation and civil service law.

“The attorney decided to lodge an appeal with the Central Appeals Tribunal after the court had dismissed the appeal against the refusal of the WIA benefit as unfounded.”
